Our practice is rooted in the Sōtō Zen tradition of Eihei Dōgen and deeply shaped by the practice and teaching of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, who came from Japan to San Francisco in 1959. Each morning Suzuki sat zazen at Sokoji, a small Sōtō Zen temple on Bush Street. Before long, people began to join him. From those early mornings grew San Francisco Zen Center and, later, Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, as an ancient practice began finding its way in a new place and among a new generation.

We sit zazen, study the teachings of Dōgen and Suzuki Roshi, and take up the forms of practice that have shaped this tradition for generations. We gather here in Sonoma County to practice together sitting, bowing, walking, chanting, studying, working, and caring for the space and one another. In our own small way, we are simply continuing the practice.
